Actually, the balrogs were in part created by Morgoth as while they were mair spirits that served Melkor to begin with, Morgoth (or Melkor as he was known then) then turned them into demons. The word balrog means "demon of might". And yes Ancalagon was more powerful than all of the balrods as were a lot of the other dragons with a few exceptions. when compared to their counterparts, (ie Ancalagon/Glaurung to Gothmog or ordinary balrogs to ordinary fire drakes) then the dragons will always come out on top. however, most of the top ranking balrogs are more powerful that most of the cold drakes and even a some of the fire drakes. Gothmog himself was no doubt more powerful than most if not all of the dragons minus Glaurung, Ancalagon, Smaug and other heavy weights of that race. when compared as a race however, the dragons were always the only race that was more powerful than the balrogs. As for how many there were, there is nothing that tells us exactly but they must hav been fairly numerous as not only were they mentioned in every battle that Morgoth was behind (like the Battle of Sudden Flame) including the ones that he lost, they are also refered to as "the Balrog Host" which would lead me at least to believe that there was a fair number. Despite not always being more powerful, the balrogs were almost always leading the dragons in battle as they are constantly mentioned as being "amongst his foremost champions". and it was Gothmog that "...led the Balrog Host and its Troll Guard, marshalled the Orc legionsand the Dragon brood..." All of this knowlege i gained from the A Tolkien Beastiary book (including the quotes)

Gothmog was slain by Glorfindel the Elf-Lord during the siege
of Gondolin. It was apparently a different Glorfindel who assisted
Aragorn and the hobbits at the crossing near Rivendale.

Morgoth has not the ability to create, only the power to corrupt.
Trolls are the corruption of the shepherds of the trees, stewards of Yavanna's realm; the Ents.

Yes correct they were not made by Morgoth. They were Maiar from Udun (The Underwold). And I think there were more than 4 or 7.... a lot more. Idk because in the battle of sudden flame I thought there were supposed to be a lot of them. I wonder if the dragons were better than the Balrogs though....

if you like to play as a tank, you can play Guardian, you like to support others you can play as a Minstrel or LoreMaster. I prefer attack and dps characters so i'm playing Hunter and Champion :-)
