Balrogs

 balrog-with-gandalf-moria.jpg

Balrogs where the most powerfull deamons of Morgoth he created four or seven of them. This mighty deamon had 15 feets of hight, mighty axes and giant maces. They have power for changing their shape – balrog could turn into shadow.

Most powefull Balrog was Gothmog, many elven heros died fighting with this servant of Morgoth. He was killed by Ecthelion during war.

Gandalf the Grey is fighting with one on the bridge of Khazad-Dum, after falling into the bottom of world, he continued his battle with Balrog and using Ring of Fire – he destroyed a Balrog ( half of mountain also when Balrog fall down…) .Few could match with the power of Balrogs.

  1. Ahnnnn there’s just one thing that don’t match with your description of the Balrogs: they wasn’t created by Morgoth, but was, in fact, those Maiar (a race similar to the Valar, but with less power) who was loyal to Melkor since the creation of Arda, and followed him in his war againest the Valar. It’s describe into the Silmarillion book the backgroud of this monster.

  2. Yes correct they were not made by Morgoth. They were Maiar from Udun (The Underwold). And I think there were more than 4 or 7…. a lot more. Idk because in the battle of sudden flame I thought there were supposed to be a lot of them. I wonder if the dragons were better than the Balrogs though….

  3. Well Ancalagon was probably much more powerful then Balrog – Gothmog included :-)

  4. Gothmog was slain by Glorfindel the Elf-Lord during the siege
of Gondolin. It was apparently a different Glorfindel who assisted
Aragorn and the hobbits at the crossing near Rivendale.

  5. Actually, the balrogs were in part created by Morgoth as while they were mair spirits that served Melkor to begin with, Morgoth (or Melkor as he was known then) then turned them into demons. The word balrog means “demon of might”. And yes Ancalagon was more powerful than all of the balrods as were a lot of the other dragons with a few exceptions. when compared to their counterparts, (ie Ancalagon/Glaurung to Gothmog or ordinary balrogs to ordinary fire drakes) then the dragons will always come out on top. however, most of the top ranking balrogs are more powerful that most of the cold drakes and even a some of the fire drakes. Gothmog himself was no doubt more powerful than most if not all of the dragons minus Glaurung, Ancalagon, Smaug and other heavy weights of that race. when compared as a race however, the dragons were always the only race that was more powerful than the balrogs. As for how many there were, there is nothing that tells us exactly but they must hav been fairly numerous as not only were they mentioned in every battle that Morgoth was behind (like the Battle of Sudden Flame) including the ones that he lost, they are also refered to as “the Balrog Host” which would lead me at least to believe that there was a fair number. Despite not always being more powerful, the balrogs were almost always leading the dragons in battle as they are constantly mentioned as being “amongst his foremost champions”. and it was Gothmog that “…led the Balrog Host and its Troll Guard, marshalled the Orc legionsand the Dragon brood…” All of this knowlege i gained from the A Tolkien Beastiary book (including the quotes)
